The Geographic Information System (GIS) links data to maps by combining location data (which specifies where things are) with various kinds of descriptive information (how things are at that location). This can serve as the foundation for mapping and analysis that can be used to the natural sciences as well as virtually every industry. Users of GIS gain a better understanding of patterns, linkages, and spatial surroundings through the usage of the tool. For example, Walgreens has more than 8,000 stores, and Esri has been assisting Walgreens in using location intelligence to share data and make more informed decisions. These decisions include everything from managing the merchandise that is stocked on the company’s shelves to selecting locations for new stores. Walgreens created WalMap, an advanced geographic information system, to investigate potential locations for additional stores. Because they have access to spatial information, their staff is able to use and share data on any device, at any time.
